Course Description

This short online course is perfect for therapists who want to connect with their clients, grow their community, elevate their practice and share their expertise without worrying about professional registration restrictions or wasting time not knowing what to post.

The research storyteller model for practice and course helps you create a clear and consistent personal brand, provides you with resources and templates that help you develop, grow and engage with your community online to create new and sustainable referral pathways and allow you to serve your community as their go-to source for your practice area.

You’ll learn how to:

  • Create content in line with your personal brand for consistent and reliable messaging to your community

  • Curate research that is relevant to your practice and create clinical guidelines that help you get results with your clients

  • Simplify your social media marketing plan and follow a simple system each month to grow and connect with new referral sources

  • Start connecting with your current, past and future clients (so you stay top of mind and become their go-to-source)

The Problem

Let me guess, you thought you could rely on word of mouth to grow your referral pathways and thought it was easier and safer to just stay off social media rather than risk breaching any AHPRA advertising or other professional guidelines and your registration.

But what you probably didn’t know was that word of mouth needs to be supported by social proofing. So, now people are searching for you and your services and when they can’t find you online - that throws up a red flag for them and instead of calling you - they look elsewhere.

In our current practice climate, you need to have a social media presence if people are going to trust you enough to make that initial call. Plus, word of mouth is unreliable, unpredictable and does not always connect you with the right clients.

Honestly, how often do you get phone calls from people that need help… just not the type that you offer and you end up spending even more time trying to find the right source to refer them on to.

Even when you have an established practice, people can forget about your area of practice or refer potential clients that aren’t a good fit.

And this isn't jsut a problem for practice owners. If you have a new program you are trying to launch, a research project you are trying to recruit for - you need a community of people who knows you, understands the work you do and trusts you enough to send people your way.

The Solution

We aren’t taught how to create a personal brand online or how to market a business during our training. All the focus of skill development is so you can help people - get back to work after a car accident, transition to school, adjust to life caring for elderly parents and children at the same time - and it should be. But no one actually sat us down and helped us with all the extra stuff that goes before you get those people that need your help sitting down in front of you.

And you’re too afraid to show up online because of all the rules and regulations AHPRA has and you don't have time to read and figure out what they mean - so instead, you don’t say anything. And hope that the people that need your help will find you.

And I get it - you’re too busy to make a change. You already have reports that are piling up and don’t need a whole bunch of extra stuff on your to do list. I completely understand - I was there, staying up late and squeezing in work in the little moments between sessions and life just to try and get it all done and deliver results for my clients.

Unlike other marketing programs that are generic for coaches or online business and don’t understand the work that we do and expect you to spend 70% of your working time on sales and marketing (!!), this model combines your CPD requirements with easy to implement and AHPRA approved marketing strategies that help position you as a reliable and valuable source for your community.

It's taking your strengths as an OT - really understanding the people you help, interpreting evidence for practice - and putting those into a model for practice to get you easily creating content and sharing it with a community of people who want to hear from you online.

Here are the learning outcomes:

1. Define your personal and professional goals for creating online content, a community and your personal brand
2. Describe who your ideal reader is, what they value, where to find them and why they are searching for information you can provide
3. Interpret the Research Storyteller model for professional development and personal brand building
4. Identify your own personal brand
5. Choose what content to create and share without breaking any professional guidelines
6. Create consistent content so your ideal reader knows, likes, trusts and understands you
7. Refine the Research Storyteller model and system for your personal goals and practice
8. Improve communication and engagement with your online community so your ideal reader takes action

I’m Cally Kent

I’m an OT, Researcher, Writer and Mama. I recently finished my PhD and now I help OTs develop their clinical, research and marketing skills.

The reason I started my PhD was because I wanted to make the connection between research and practice easier - I wanted to do research within my own small, run-out-of my second hand car mobile pediatric therapy business.

I had big dreams, no time or budget and even less understanding about what the research world is like.

So, to increase my research skills I went back to school and 5 years later emerged knowing more about intervention testing, feasibility, analysis and APA formatting than anyone who spends as much money at the hairdresser as I do should know.

What I also learned was that the research world is like on ultimate Island time - everything runs so slowly you feel like Fiji is fast paced. This is like those holidays where you lose track of what day it is… after everyone has had a long lunch, half a bottle of chardonnay and has their shoes off by the pool but are too relaxed to actually get into swimmers.

Did you know it takes 17 years for research to filter down into practice (No, seriously! have a read here if you are interested: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3241518/). This fact got me so worked up - I have since made it my mission to significantly reduce that number.

And I need your help to do it.
‘Cause here’s the truth. I’m tired of seeing rumours and bulls**t about health and therapy get given air by people who don’t know what they are talking about while therapists are too afraid to say anything online.

I want to change the standard for health information online. But I can’t do it alone. Let me help you believe in yourself, that you are capable of mindfully building your personal brand, curating research for your community and sharing about what you do to help people. All of this is not only possible but easy when you learn the processes of Research Storytelling. I’ve broken it down and given away all the secrets so you too can become a Research Storyteller and part of the Research Storytelling movement. I’ll see you on the inside - Cally xx

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How much time is it going to take me?

That depends on you - one hour a week of focused time and good attention for each of the 4 modules and you will be up and running. But you keep access to it for 12 months - so you can also spread it out, during nap times and other stolen moments of time that would otherwise be filled with laundry or case notes.

  • I am an academic/researcher and don’t work directly with clients anymore. Is this program still applicable?

Yes - developing an online presence and being mindful of how you create your personal brand is very relevant for academics and researchers. Having an online presence can help with all sorts of sticky areas in the research process, including recruitment, collaboration, grant applications and dissemination of your research findings. There are a couple of marketing modules that you will need to adapt for your career, as it may not be appropriate to market your services in the same way, but these alternatives are provided for in the modules so you don’t have to figure it out for yourself.

  • How fast can I expect to see results?

The program has you starting to share from week 2 and growing your community immediately. How quickly it grows and how meaningful those relationships are is up to you, where this sits in your list of priorities and how much time and energy you dedicate to it.

  • I am not a therapist and don’t have an allied health background. Can I still join?

Best not, the Research Storyteller workshop has been designed specifically for occupational therapists and allied health professionals. It assumes certain professional requirements, existing understanding and clinical skills to be able to deliver and complete the program in the timeframe that we have. There are many programs available to help with more generic branding or marketing - but this is specifically for therapists and as such I won’t be accepting any participants who don’t have an allied health background.
